Brightek Optoelectronics, one of the leading semiconductor package suppliers and solution providers, has become one of the latest key LED manufacturers to join ISELED Alliance, an open alliance initially formed by Inova Semiconductors to promote the next-generation viable in-car lighting solution with a revolutionary system approach.
With the rise in sales of luxury vehicles, improving advancements in the automotive industry, and increasing demand for LEDs in cars, the global automotive interior ambient lighting market is projected to experience growth at a CAGR of 7.2% from 2014 to 2025.
Brightek and ISELED Alliance — a good match
The company joined ISELED Alliance in the first half of 2019. According to Brightek’s leadership, ISELED Alliance is a good match for Brightek, aligning its long-term research and development plan with the goals of the Alliance.
Brightek had previously successfully promoted ICLED in gaming applications, and now is expanding the same technology in the automotive industry.
“Brightek is technology and quality oriented in the field of LED packaging, especially in automotive and consumer electronics’ products. As a member of ISELED, we are committed to contributing our experience and helping develop products, which meet the market expectations,” said Jason Wu, Vice President of Brightek.
ISELED Alliance was created for companies in IC, LED packaging, lighting fixture, automation equipment, and software industries. Initially launched in November 2016 with just five members, now ISELED Alliance is a strong network of more than 30 companies and institutions, including brands like Allegro MicroSystems, Hella, Grupo Antolin, Inova Semiconductors, and Microchip Technology. Currently, the Alliance covers the entire value chain to establish ISELED as a standard system solution.
China’s automotive industry is open to next-gen in-car lighting solution
The fact that Brightek has been an active supplier of LEDs in China's automotive market makes the company an important member of the Alliance. Besides providing Chinese manufacturers with technical solutions based on a similar concept to ISELED products, Brightek also has close partner relationships with a number of prestigious local automotive manufacturers.
Since joining the alliance, Brightek proactively promotes this RGB solution together with other ISELED members and attends annual seminars to share the latest information and feedback with companies on the China market.
According to Brightek’s market analysis, even though China’s auto manufacturers are slower than Western companies to incorporate new technologies into their products, they are open and ready to try innovative solutions, such as adding the ambient lighting function into mid-level vehicles. This kind of mindset should certainly make China a great market opportunity for ICLED adoption.
ICLED technology: the future of car interior lighting and autonomous driving
Today, automotive applications are considered to be a growing sector for LED-based lighting. Analysts say it demonstrates a “renaissance-like” re-emergence for some LED manufacturers in terms of revenue growth. According to Philip Smallwood, director of research at Strategies Unlimited, the projected annual growth in LED revenue for exterior auto lighting over the next five years is 18%.
The essence of the ISELED concept is combining RGB chips and driver IC in a LED package. Current application of this technology is focused on car interior ambient lighting, but in the future it should be extended to be applied in autonomous driving solutions. For example, autonomous cars will be able to use lights of a particular color to inform pedestrians or nearby vehicle drivers about its actions or communicate with them using colored lights in another way.
Brightek’s role in ISELED Alliance
Brightek supports the ISELED Alliance by actively advancing ICLED development, and building strategic partnerships with key international manufacturers. For example, as part of the ISELED Alliance cooperation project, Brightek has partnered with a distinguished semiconductor manufacturer in Germany to develop a number of new ICLED products.
Brightek looks to target the automotive ambient markets in China, Europe, and Americas. And its long-term development goal is to bring ICLED products to both China’s and international automotive markets, to achieve the vision of transforming automotive lighting in a communication solution for autonomous driving.
